The Whimsical Music Studio

Energetic & fun virtual lessons:

Learning a new skill can be hard for many reasons, especially if we desire to be proficient from the get-go.

The way through that more difficult learning curve at the beginning of our musical journey is by finding the fun. This is why one of the things I focus on the most in lessons is helping my students feel comfortable while we also have a great time! In my 13 years as a private voice, piano, and songwriting teacher I’ve found that this keeps students interested in learning their instruments for a much longer period.

Many students I’ve had throughout the years have come to me after giving up on their instrument while working with another teacher. As a kid, and even as an adult, we are much more likely to look forward to doing things that feel joyful. I believe having fun while learning is what keeps students feel excited about continuing to learn their instrument.

I also believe in a strong musical foundation; learning music is like learning a new language. In our lessons, we’ll discuss music theory, musicianship, and the music we love and why we love it. With these discussions, we can dive more deeply into understanding music.

Why work with me?

I am a deeply sensitive person with a bachelor’s in music who loves to help my students fall in love with music.

I believe there are many students out there, adults and children alike, who need or even just desire a softer touch. Either because they’ve had a bad experience with another teacher or because, like me, they are very sensitive.

I work very hard to be sure my students feel comfortable and safe. This aids in my being able to constructively correct them as needed in the learning process. It helps make “mistakes” feel neutral, just a part of learning something new. In fact, it’s those “mistakes” that help us figure out what we don’t know and deepen our understanding of music.

Music lessons can be enjoyable, comfortable, and full of deep learning.

There are also quite a few benefits to virtual learning: 1. No travel time/dealing with traffic. 2. No missed lessons due to minor illness. 3. Students can generally complete their lessons on their own.

More about Sara:

It all began over 10 years ago…

I was a struggling performer just out of music college, doing day jobs that sucked all of the creative life out of me. I began teaching lessons on top of my full-time job with my first student in the summer of 2010 when I was just 24 years old. I quit my full-time job in early 2013 to pursue teaching and I’ve been doing it ever since.

In the past 3+ years much has changed - we lived through COVID and my studio went from being 100% in-person to entirely online. In late 2021 my husband and I moved from the Pacific Northwest to Los Angeles.

Teaching remotely has allowed me to continue to help my students learn and fall in love with music even when we don’t live in the same zip code or time zone! I now have students as far away as Virginia.

I work every day to be the teacher I know a sensitive kid like me would have needed: patient, very silly, lots of fun, and also pushing my students to learn and grow.
